Zuiderzeemuseum Enkhuizen

A story of a rich culture
In 1932, the Afsluitdijk closed off the Zuiderzee from the Waddenzee and received its new name ‘IJsselmeer’. The part outside the dyke is now part of the Waddenzee. The Zuiderzeemuseum is dedicated to the history, current events and future of the IJsselmeer area. The central themes are water, crafts and communities. The outdoor part of the museum with its historical buildings and the indoor part with its thematic expositions show this story very well. Heritage, arts, photography and design play an important part in this.

Outdoor museum
Walk back in time over the cobbled streets in the outdoor museum. More than 140 historical buildings from around the former Zuiderzee form a complete village here. Meet the inhabitants of Urk, visit the cheese warehouse and see what the smith is working at. Do you still know what a agricultural bank did? Come and discover it here! Also don't miss the modern design presentations inspired by working and living in past times. Are you hungry from all that history? Enjoy fresh smoked fish or have a nice bite to eat at café Hindeloopen while enjoying the beautiful view of the IJsselmeer.

Indoor museum
The indoor museum is the treasury of the Zuiderzee; here, different collections are presented in a modern way. Take a  Trip around the Zuiderzee and experience how people used to live near this inland sea. During the exhibition you'll travel from Enkhuizen over the Afsluitdijk to Friesland. Then you'll return to North Holland, where you'll visit Marken and Volendam. Also admire the large collection historical boats in the boat hall.
